Exam: Bone Mineral Density (BMD)

Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Description

A BMD examination is a procedure used to measure bone loss. Patients are required to lie flat on a table for approximately 10 minutes to complete the examination whilst they are being scanned.

The lumbar spine and one hip are scanned to measure the density of your bones.

It is best to have this examination at the same facility every time inorder for comparisons to be made to the previous study and to assess the improvement or deterioration in the bone loss.

An appointment is required for this examination

Preparation

There is no preparation and the patients do not have to remove any clothing; although we recommend that the patient wear something comfortable without metal parts.
